RSS Feed Items

Feed items are associated with individual pages and are aggregated into RSS feeds. They are nodes of data about the page or article which are included in the feed and used in listings (i.e., news listing or event listing). It is possible for a page to have multiple RSS items attached to it.

Level 10 users can view all the items of a feed by navigating to Content > RSS, hovering over the feed, and selecting Items.

Users levels 8 through 10 can view the items attached to a specific page by checking the page out and either:

  • In Content > Pages, hovering over the page and selecting Edit > RSS (only available if the page already has an RSS item).
  • While viewing a page, selecting Properties from the top toolbar and "RSS" from the lefthand menu.

RSS items can be edited or deleted. Deleting an item permanently removes it from both the feed and OU Campus. To avoid broken links, it is recommended you rebuild the RSS feed after deleting any items.

Creating an RSS ItemLink to this section

There are two ways to create RSS items. You may have a new page template that provides options for creating an RSS item when making a new page. In this case, the fields for creating a new item vary depending on the templates that your school has, although they will most likely resemble the options below.

RSS items can also be created from existing pages. The page must already be associated with an RSS feed for you to create items for the feed.

To create a new RSS item for an existing page:

  1. While viewing a page, selecting Properties from the top toolbar and "RSS" from the lefthand menu.
  2. While viewing the RSS for a page (remember, it must be checked out), click the green +New button.
  3. Add a title and description.
  4. Leave the "Link" field as [auto] to populate the link with the current page address.
  5. The author, publish date, and publish time can be left as the defaults or modified. When left at [auto], the date and time are the date and time you publish the RSS item.
*If you are adding an item to an events RSS feed, set the publish date to the scheduled date of the event. Events RSS feeds only display items with a future publish date.
  6. If it is a media RSS item, click the green +Add button to add media such as an image or video. In the box, configure the media content:
    • Enter a title (required) and description for the media file, as well as any keywords.
    • Choose the media file (required), and a thumbnail if desired.
    • Click Create.
  7. Add any tags or extra XML to the item. Note: The tags on an RSS item are separate from the page tags. Changing the page tags doesn't change the RSS item tags, and vice versa.
  8. Click Save.
  9. Publish the page to publish the RSS item. It is added to the RSS feed.

Rebuilding FeedsLink to this section

Rebuilding a feed updates it after adding, editing, importing, or deleting items. To rebuild a feed, while viewing RSS items for a page, click the "Rebuild Feed" button above the list of items. Choose which publish target to publish the feed to, and click "Publish."

Importing ItemsLink to this section

You can import RSS items from another feed to add to the items for a page. To do so, while viewing the RSS items for a page, click the "Import Items" button above the list of items. Paste in the URL of the feed and click "Import." The items are then associated with the page. You need to rebuild the feed to add them into the RSS feed.

Be aware that if the external RSS feed isn't formatted in a way that OU Campus can parse, you won't be able to import it. The feed must follow the RSS specifications exactly. Only standard parts of feed items (title, link, description, author, and publish date) are imported.
