Using Social Media and RSS
Social media is more than just Facebook and Twitter. It extends to different ways the public can be involved with the institution, including accessing news and contributing content to blogs. Understanding the different options helps to determine how the institution can extend its visibility and be involved with site visitors.
Authorized users can automate the publishing of content to social media channels, such as Facebook and Twitter, with the creation or update of a web page. Updates can occur on an immediate of scheduled basis, and users can publish to multiple Twitter accounts and Facebook Page simultaneous. Additionally, with the OU Social feature, it is possible to manage the content on Facebook pages from within OU Campus. Blog content may also be integrated into OU Campus and managed through the interface. An RSS feed can be set up and feed items added by users. Administrators can view a report of all social media posts published from within OU Campus.
OU Social is a Facebook app that provides a powerful yet simple solution to increase the presence of the institution on Facebook with the addition of a Facebook Page Tab to a Facebook Page. By linking a Facebook Page to OU Campus, users can select which OU Campus-managed web page will be synchronized with the a Facebook landing page or pages. This provides the ability to update social media and webpages simultaneously by editing one file.
The Send to Facebook feature allows authorized users to automatically send wall posts to Facebook Pages. This feature enables users to create wall posts from OU Campus in conjunction with the creation or update of content, which can occur on an immediate or scheduled basis. In addition, users can link to multiple Facebook Pages and publish to only the desired pages.
Send to Twitter allows users to send a tweet to a linked Twitter account. In addition to the desired content, this message can contain a link to the page. Administrators can also configure a default tweet, which populates at the time of page publishing and gives the end user starting text, which they can edit if necessary. Users can link to multiple Twitter accounts and publish to only the desired accounts.
The OUBlogs feature allows content to be added to blogs utilizing blogging systems, such as WordPress, through OU Campus. OU Blogs is compatible with blogging systems that support XML-RPC. The blog must be set up outside of OU Campus prior to adding it to OU Campus as the CMS is not a dedicated blogging system.
OU Campus can be used to manage the use of RSS as a content delivery medium. Template options, such as XML variables and built-in support for custom scripts in many scripting languages allow for flexible implementations in the presentation of news and media feeds. An RSS feed can be set up and feed items added by users.
