Compare allows a user or reviewer (e.g., an approver) to easily identify changes that have been made to a given page by comparing the newly proposed page with either the page currently on the production server (the last published version of the page), or to any prior published or backed-up version, or to a version on a publish target (if Multi-Target Publish is in use). The version must be available in the versioning archive. Document comparison highlights text, image, and asset changes with color coding and strikethrough notations.
The Compare screen also shows the "Version Description" for a page under the Message column.
To utilize the Compare option:
- Click on the Compare button from within the edit options of the page, or click the Compare icon under the Review column on the folder structure view.
Compare icon in folder structure:
- Select the type of compare to be used.
Compare page shows a live view comparison when comparing to the version on the production server or publish target. This selection can be used with other versions but will render a source code comparison. This option pulls in the includes files as well.
Compare page (no includes) shows a live view comparison when comparing to the version on the production server or publish target. This selection can be used with other versions but will render a source code comparison. This version will not pull in include files. It is useful for pages rendered as ASP or when the compare is not being rendered due to the format of the include files.
Compare source provides a source code comparison. It can be used with all versions of the page.
- Next, select the file to which the currently saved version should be compared.
Clicking on the Live version will render a comparison as the page will appear to site visitors, unless Compare source is selected from the drop-down.
Clicking on a previous version renders a source view of the comparison with the highlighting still visible. Versions published to different published targets are listed with the production server under Revision and can be selected for comparison.
When using the Compare function, the results will be color-coded and stylized in order to clearly emphasize where the changes have occurred.
|Type of Change||Color||Style|
|Formatting Change||Blue||Squiggle underline|
|Type of Change||Color||Style|
|Addition or Formatting Change||Green||Underlined|
When using the Compare page selection with the Live option, the Compare function will render a comparison that looks similar to what the page would look like to visitors
to the site. Changes will be highlighted using the color and stylizing listed above.
When comparing to a previous version other than the live site, or when using the Compare source selection with the Live option, the Compare function will render a comparison within
the source view. A rendering of what the page would look like to site visitors will
not render. Changes will still be highlighted using the color and stylizing listed above.

Approvers can use this feature when reviewing a page prior to publishing it. The approver (depending on the page's access settings) can then elect to publish the page, schedule it for publish, send it to another user for review, decline to publish it but keep the changes, which then sends it back to the requestor, or decline to publish it and revert to the previous version. This also sends it back to the requestor.
