Editing Content

The OU Campus CMS provides many ways to edit content. Administrators can set up the system to use a variety of editing methods and tools. Various editors are available including a fully customizable WYSIWYG editor and a source code editor. Editable regions can be defined. These areas can be set up to be edited using the default WYSIWYG toolbar and the toolbar can be customized to only allow for the use of specific styles and editing features. Form-based editing can be configured with the use of MultiEdit. Content can be re-used with the use of assets, snippets, and XML/XSL templates.

For users, access to editing tools may be as simple as logging into the system via a DirectEdit link. This method allows for administrators and system designers to determine the editing method and tools best suited for the content of that particular page.

For example, a home page of a departmental site might just need occasional text editing. The WYSIWYG editor and default toolbar can provide basic word processing features including the ability to choose font families and sizes, apply styles, select, upload and edit images and other media, format tables, and drop in assets and snippets. Alternatively, the navigation element, for example a submenu, would not require full formatting and styling capability. In this case, a modified WYSIWYG toolbar might only include a limited number of available font families and styles, and not include  access to the image editor or media inserter.

In another example, MultiEdit can be used for faculty pages. The MultiEdit tag creates a form for entering specific types of content. This would ensure that when a faculty member edits content for their page, they would have specific fields to fill in for name, title, education, biography, publications and department.

XML/XSL templates can also be designed and managed in such a way to ensure that certain types of information are handled in a specific way. For example, in a faculty directory, only the faculty template that includes the MultiEdit form would be available to create new pages. Or templates can be used to create RSS feeds and archives.
