Recycle Bin
Contents
There will be times that, as an administrator, you may want to recover a deleted file. Now with OmniUpdate’s new Recycle Bin feature you will be able to recover deleted files with ease from the staging server. The two new icons you will use for this procedure are the recycle bin icon and the restore icon shown below.
Use of the Recycle Bin
The recycle bin must be setup on a site by site basis. Level 8, 9, & 10 users (those who can delete files) are the only users who can use the recycle bin.
The recycle bin is only for files on the Staging server. When a file is sent to the Recycle Bin on the staging server, the file and all of its version history as well as its path and access rights are all moved to the Recycle Bin. All file(s) that were created on the Production server from the file being sent to the Recycle Bin are permanently deleted from the production server.
The Recycle Bin is for files only, directories can not be sent to the Recycle Bin. Deleting a directory will permanently delete all files and folders contained in the directory from both the stage and production servers. This is the same function as when there is no Recycle Bin set up for a web site.
Files deleted from the production server (including images, PDFs, and other files that do not have a direct counterpart on the staging server) are deleted permanently and are not recoverable.
When a file is restored from the Recycle Bin, the file, its version history and file permissions are moved back to the original location on the staging server. The file must be published to return the file(s) to the production server.
If a file of the same name as a recycled file has been created on the staging server in the same directory path, and you want to restore the file from the Recycle Bin, you will be warned that you must move, rename, or recycle the file before restoring the original.
Multiple files of the same name and (and path) can be sent to the Recycle Bin, they will all be listed in the recycle bin but with a -# (file-1.ext, file-2.ext, etc.) appended to the subsequent files that are moved to the Recycle Bin.
The Recycle Bin is not meant to be used as an archive. If a file is sent to the Recycle Bin, and later the directory is deleted, if the file is selected to be restored, the original path to the file will be recreated and the file will be moved back. None of the access properties that may be necessary to publish the page will exist as they are stored with the directory, and the original directory was deleted. The access settings and/or directory variables will need to be set by the admin in order to manage or publish the file.
Setup the Recycle Bin
A level 10 Administrator can set up the Recycle Bin feature with just a few easy steps. First click the Setup tab and then click the Sites Tab in the second row of tabbed items. The following steps will must be done for EACH web site that you want to use a Recycle Bin.
Next click the Edit icon in the sites menu for the site you wish to add the Recycle Bin feature to.
Under Site Preferences you must name your new Recycle Bin and be sure to begin that name with a forward slash /. Example: /recyclebin. Once the filename of the Recycle Bin is correctly entered you will get the green check mark indicating you named it successfully. The Recycle Bin must be at the root of the site, nested directory Recycle Bins are not supported.
Once setup, the Recycle Bin will not be visible as a directory at the root of the staging server from the Content>Pages view.
IF you have access to the staging server via FTP, you can use a 'dot' filename (eg. /.trash or /.recyclebin) If you choose to prefix the filename with a '.' you will make the Recycle Bin folder invisible to most FTP clients.
How to restore a file
When a file is recycled, it will be placed inside the Recycle Bin. There it can be recovered by first clicking the Restore icon, which takes you within the Recycle Bin, and then clicking the secondary Restore icon for the file you want to retrieve from the bin. The restored file will be placed back in its original location.
To exit the Recycle Bin, click the Exit Recycle Bin button.
Keep in mind that there is no Recycle Bin feature on the production server. A file or folder deleted on production will not be recoverable.
